THROUGH THE WEEKEND WITH THE HEAVIEST BURST OF SNOW EXPECTED ON
SUNDAY ASSOCIATED WITH A STRONG LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM AND COLD
FRONTAL PASSAGE. WINDS WILL BE STRONGEST ON SUNDAY AS WELL. THE
SNOW AND WIND WILL TAPER OFF BY SUNRISE ON MONDAY.

ACCUMULATE OVER THE WEST FACING PEAKS ABOVE 8000 FEET THROUGHOUT

* WIND AND VISIBILITY…WIND SPEEDS WILL REMAIN ELEVATED
THROUGHOUT THE EVENT WITH THE STRONGEST WINDS EXPECTED ON SUNDAY
WHEN GUSTS OVER 70 MPH CAN BE EXPECTED AT THE PEAKS WITH

Grand Targhee Resort will open for its 44th ski season on Friday, November 23 with top to bottom skiing on Fred’s Mountain and three out of five lifts running; Dreamcatcher, Shoshone and Papoose Magic Carpet, are scheduled to run conditions permitting. Lifts will run from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Grand Targhee has received over 73 inches of snow since the middle of October and additional lifts and terrain will open as soon as Grand Targhee receives additional snowfall and conditions allow.

The GTR Terrain Park will open with several features for all freeriders to get their jib on. Ski & Snowboard School, Mini-Moose Ski School and all retail and rental will operated on a normal schedule. Nordic track in Rick’s Basin will open partially on Friday. Most of the track has good snow conditions but there will be some occasional thin spots. No classic track will be set, please check-in at the Activities Center or Ski & Snowboard School for the most up-to-date Nordic conditions and map.

Storms moving through the region during this week favored the upper elevations, the west slope of the Teton Range, the Salt River Range and Star Valley. At the higher elevations this new snow accumulated on a weak layer of buried surface hoar that lies upon a slick melt-freeze crust.

The first storm impacted the area on Friday and Saturday and brought 17 inches of new snow to Grand Targhee Resort, 10 inches to Togwotee Pass and 7 to 14 inches to Star Valley and the Salt River Range.

During the next three days of this week skies were mostly cloudy and the higher elevations picked up an inch or two of new snow each day. On the sixth day of this week the mountains picked up another four to six inches of new snow. Total snowfall accumulation for this week at 9,500 feet was 29 inches on the west slope of the Teton Range, 16 inches on Togwotee Pass, 14 inches at Blind Bull Summit in the Wyoming Range, 14 inches on Commissary Ridge in the Salt River Range and 12 inches on the eastern front of the Teton Range.

The first storm ushered cold air into the region and was accompanied by northwest winds that averaged 21 miles per hour in the later portion of the storm. Temperatures at 10,000 feet were in the 20s when this storm began on Friday and in the single digits on Sunday and Monday. Temperatures warmed into the teens and 20s during the last three days of this week.

At the upper elevations, above 9,000 feet on southerly aspects and above 8,500 feet on northerly aspects, this new snow accumulated on well developed surface hoar that grew on a hard October melt-freeze crust during the previous week. This new snow fell mostly on bare ground below an elevation of 8,500 feet.

There were two avalanches reported on the last day of this week near Grand Targhee Resort. Both occurred on north to northeast aspects at an elevation of about 9,500 feet in backcountry conditions. One was reported to have been remotely triggered and both are believed to have released on a problem layer comprised of buried surface hoar on a hard October crust.

Snow depths at the end of this week ranged from 17 to 26 inches at the upper elevations, and were a foot or less deep at the mid elevations and less than six deep at the lower elevations.

Dry conditions and clear skies foster surface hoar growth on October melt-freeze crusts. We experienced “Indian Summer” type conditions during this week. Skies were generally clear or partly cloudy and it was dry. Days were warm and nights were cool. At 10,000 feet temperatures were in the 20s and 30s during the first five days of the week and in the 30s and 40s during the last two days of the week. Valley temperatures dropped into the upper 20s to lows 30s at night and rose into the 40s and 50s during the days. Winds were generally light from the west but backed to the south-southwest and increased at the end of the week ahead of an approaching trough.

The repeated melt-freeze cycles consolidated the October snowpack. Well developed melt-freeze crusts formed on the old snow surface and surface growth on these crusts became well developed as the week progressed.
